FROM 2011 TO 2013 OUR UMASCE CONSULTATIONS

A Note From Susan Willhauck

Thanks to those who attended the 2011 UMASCE Consultation! For those of you who could not attend, we missed you and hope that you will be back with us in 2013. I am grateful to our 2011 Design Team and Executive Committee for your work to create a stimulating and engaging Consultation on "Innovating from the Margins." Shout-outs to our presenters--Carol Krau, for unpacking our mental models and Wanda Stahl for exploring discipleship and leader formation at an "Unchurch" with us. Also, thanks to John Roberto for his invigorating presentation on life-long faith formation and reaching those Scenario # 1 people (you had to be there). We are grateful to Bruce Roberts for sharing his innovations in peer learning and to Dori Baker as well for her rich and interactive session on VocationCARE. I, for one, came away from these with lots of ideas, questions and new life. We appreciate the leadership of Fred Edie for grace-filled worship. We are thrilled to have the presence of students/new scholars with us. You bring freshness (in a good way) to our discussions and to the field.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2013

We find ourselves on the margins in many ways--the church is marginalized in the culture; some are marginalized in the church. Very many people are on the margins of society, struggling just to survive. There is a need to be in the marginal places in the world with hope. Some of us feel our discipline is on the margins of the academy and the church. Some of you may feel on the margins of UMASCE. So what do we do? We innovate! And we have just scratched the surface of what that means at our Consultation, but keep the thoughts flowing...You can join the UMASCE group on facebook and continue the conversation.

The Design Team has processed your evaluations. They were very positive with some excellent suggestions. A recurring theme is that you needed more process time, maybe fewer presentations and more time to discuss. We hear you and will factor that in in 2013. You also want to change locations, but want to continue to meet in a natural environment, "vacation spot."

WE ARE GOING TO COLORADO

The decision has been made. Our 2013 Consulation will be at the Highlands Presbyterian Camp and Retreat Center in Colorado, July 27 -30, 2013 . The Center is just south of Estes Park and also on the edge of Yellowstone National Park. It is an intimate and beautiful setting where we will be possibly the only guests. If you wish to look at the location further you can do so on www.highlandscamp.org.

About this Web Site

It seems best to use this web site more as a location for documents to which we need to refer than for ongoing information, except for the purpose of providing for consultation registration, etc.

The list of members of UMASCE will no longer contain contact information, so if you are wishing to locate someone please contact Ben Marshall at rben@airmail.net and he will provide you with how to contact that person. This change seems best for security purposes.
